Orienteering is a combination of running skills with the ability to concentrate during the activity. By using a map and a compass the control points have to be found as fast as possible. The fascination of this sport is the individual planning and finding the best course. The control points are marked with orange-white lanterns and equipped with control stations.
In the first years of orienteering the participants got a piece of paper at the start and they needed to get a sign on it from every control station to show the attendance. SPORTident has developed an electronic punching and identification system. Until today we equipped 140,000 athletes with this system worldwide.
The SPORTident AIR+ as well as the SPORTident classic system support the requirements of foot orienteering with a simple timekeeping system and an identification feature at check points in the field. The SPORTident System is based on the SPORTident Card, an extended data memory stick in which the data of the card-owner will be stored, and the SPORTident Stations.
With the classic system the timing is done only by punching the SPORTident Card into the SPORTident Stations at a check points. Approved by the IOF the timekeeping can also be done with the contactless timing system AIR+. The athlete has just to pass by the station in a specific distance for a successful registration.
The SPORTident Card supports fast entries to apply for an event. It eliminates the need of a centralised data base and protects runner's privacy. During the race the SPORTident Card stores lap times and control points code numbers.
Each orienteering participant has to be equipped either with a classic SI-Card for direct punching or a SPORTident ActiveCard (SIAC) for contactless timing. In contrast to the classic cards the SIAC has to be switched on before starting a race.
The SI-Stations should be synchronised shortly before application. To illustrate the application of the AIR+ configuration to the participants, it is recommended to set up a test course with some control points in the event centre. There the athletes can test and monitor the feedback signals of the SIAC at different passing speeds.
The standard SPORTident procedure CLEAR – CHECK – START – CONTROL(S) – FINISH remains, no matter which system is used. During the race the cards record split times and checkpoint numbers. The successful registration of the checkpoints is indicated by an optical and acoustical feedback signal emitted by the Control Stations. Using the classic punching system with the classic SI-Cards, only the SI-Card11 is giving an optical feedback signal in addtion. Using the AIR+ configuration, the SIAC emits an optical as well as an acoustical feedback signal additionally to the SI-Stations. When passing the FINISH station the SIAC becomes deactivated. Without a finish record the device deactivates itself 20 hours after having received the last record.
After the finish, race data stored in participant’s SI-Card have to be read onto a computer for event evaluation. The readout is possible at any time and not depending on SI-Card's activation. Optionally, the data can be read out and transmitted by radio. For this online publication of intermediate and finish times the SPORTident stations additionally can be equipped with a GSM modem.
The O-Starter is the perfect system for training your body and intellect. O-Starter uses special SI stations that stand out due to their orange colour. The stations register the number of the SI-Card and transmit their own code number to the SI-Card that is interfacing with.
